Is there anything as steadfast as God’s love? Throughout our lives, we return to God each day, a thousand times, a million times, and every time God meets us with abundant mercy and blows the Spirit into our hearts, again and again, over and over, until we become the dust that God used to create us. Today, Ash Wednesday, we wear that dust smeared on our foreheads, a reminder that we were created by God, and it is only God’s love that makes us new. We–who curl up in exhaustion, who suffer the deep tiredness of the soul, who bear the devastation of fickleness and change in human love and loss–we rest in the steadfastness of God’s love and mercy, unchanging, sustaining us for life.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1
